In the 1970s, rattan furniture could be found in almost every Singaporean household. It's a favoured furniture as it's durable and airy. Yet from the ’90s onwards, demand fell as people preferred heavier furniture over rattan designs.

Nowadays, many customers see their old rattan furniture as a keepsake. After all, this piece of furniture could have been with them for more than 20 years and holds memories,” he says. “Some rattan furniture pieces are like family heirlooms, passed down from generation to generation.”

In the making of this rattan piece, I was brought back to memories of rattan pieces back in my mother's hometown in Malaysia. I googled the history of rattan making in Singapore and came across this mini docu-series of a rattan maker Mr Chen Foon Kee. Do hop over to have a watch if you'd be keen in the history of this traditional craft.

Rattan design has made a comeback in the recent years and still very much trending. It's been on my to-make list for the longest time and I've finally produced one - of intricate rattan details, piecing the tiny strokes of the Chinese characters for a 3D pop-up in tea brown acrylic - a blend of retro and oriental.

Have your family name crafted in tea-brown acrylic pop up, adorned with cherry blossoms (latest 2024 version) and a replicated stone-stamp blessings for the home engraved at the bottom.

In the spirit of rattan furniture making, I hope this piece would be one for your family's preserve - be it for a new home, your annual family portrait shoot, in the many years to come.
